Is backup faster if VM is turned off ?

Hello experts,

Is Proxmox backup faster if VM is turned off ? I couldn't find any reference in this regards.

Depends if the VM does any IO on the disks.

VM does a lot of I/O on the disk, I did turn it off for backup and it did not help much.

According to your other post you are facing general I/O issues so naturally backups are slow too. You need to find the cause for high IO delay. See the other post for tips where to start searching. Also, please provide plenty of details about host, software, network, filesystem, backup destination, config, etc.

And I just saw in your other post that you are using Ceph. Yes, Proxmox backup is slow with Cephfs. Try rdb export?

I try whatever is available in GUI, I have no idea how rdb export is done.

Currently you won't get around using the CLI, if you want fast Backups of RDB Images.

You might want to take a look at https://github.com/lephisto/cv4pve-barc/tree/master or the project is was forked from. It s work in progress, but provides me with some blazing fast RDB Image backups.

I didn't try it with LXC yet because i don't use it, though it should be working.
