IP Routing issues

Hi

I've purchased a hosted server, and installed Proxmox 1.3 on it from the ISO.

The Proxmox IP is xxx.xxx.54.14 / 255.255.252.0 with a gateway of xxx.xxx.52.1

I have a range of IP addresses of xxx.xxx.54.39 -53

When I create an OpenVZ container, everything just works as it should

However, when I create an Fully Virtualised KVM from an ISO, I can only ping other IP addresses on Proxmox, I cannot ping, or get access to the outside world. I've tried with both the gateway as 54.14 and as 52.1 with no joy.

I've tried the routed configuration - http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Network_Model, with a couple of the IP addresses, but no luck. everything stops working.

Annoyingly, I had this working last night, went to bed, and when I woke up, it was offline, which leads me to believe that the comment made on the above link "For security reason they stop networking as soon as they detect multiple MAC addresses" may be coming into play.

Given the IP addresses and circumstances above, what should /etc/network/interfaces look like, and how should a fully virtualised KVM be configured in terms of gateway address?

Please verify that first (ask your provider).

Thanks

Have done so, but with this particular provider, I've learned from bitter experience it is better to try and fix or work around it yourself. I let you know how it progresses

Hi

So the answer from suppport is as follows: -

"Our networks will map the MAC address of the network port with the IP
addresses assigned to your server. With this in mind, the virtual box will
need to be mapped as well. Please provide us with the MAC address &
associated IP addresses and we can resolve this for you"

On a KVM fully virtualised system, how are the MAC addresses created, and where are they altered, as I assume that to make this work, I'm going to have to create a number of MAC addresses, and attach them to each IP, so if there are re-installtions, and general testing, I can change the MAC to the one associated with the IP.

see /etc/qemu-server/VMID.conf
(MAC´s for KVM are autocreated but you can also specify and edit one in this file for each KVM guest)

for documentation, see the man pages of 'qm':
Code:
man qm
