Hello all,

When I built my last PVE server I updated the Intel microcode. I had to rebuild it over the weekend, and knowing the microcode update was already completed, I just validated it. It came back as thought the microcode update was not done. I am now officially confused. Are the microcode updates not permanent?

Thanks,
Steve

no, microcode updates are applied to the cpu by the kernel on system boot but they have to be installed on the os first - they are more like a device driver and try to fix cpu issues on the os / kernel level (simplified).

if you reinstall your os you have to reinstall the microcode packages.

bios / uefi updates are written to the mainboard chip and are permanent. they have fixes for cpu issues too.
