[SOLVED] Installer abruptly aborts, reboots, no errors

So I'm having a bit of a weird situation here.

I created a small, brandnew PC as a proxmox slave. I hope I didn't buy any incompatible parts, but here is the list of relevant parts:

AMD Ryzen 7 5700X
500GB Samsung EVO nVME
64GB Dual-Kit RAM
Gigabyte B550I Aorus Pro (Mini-ITX)
Nvidia GT730 (just a old card for video output, not bought)

I can confirm the rig works. I've installed zorinOS and arch linux on it and both systems worked just as you would expect. Now, when trying to install proxmox, the story looks vastly different.

The proxmox ISO was written onto a usb drive via dd. It's the newest ISO I could find on the download section, uploaded on the 4th of may. At first, it boots, I get into the grub boot screen, select "Install proxmox VE" and it continues. Bit of debug text pops up regarding devpts mounted on "/dev/pts" and "starting D-Bus daemon". After that, it receives it's IP from the router and shortly after, it boots into the installation gui.

And this is when things go crazy. The behavior is not consistent at all at this point. Most of the time, I'm just seeing a white screen, then it crashes. Sometimes, I get to the "I agree" part of the EULA stuff, and sometimes, I get into the drive selection. Once, I managed to get into the country and timezone selection, but I've never managed to actually install proxmox. Every single time, I'm thrown back into the shell, and it says "Installation done, rebooting ...", even tho it didn't really do anything. Then, the system reboots and I'm right at the beginning again.

Some things I did or noticed:

1. My first instinct was to disable secure boot, however, that didn't do anything.
2. In the output, I saw this line: "modprobe: error could not insert 'kvm_amd': operation not supported" - I'm not sure how bad that is or if it even has any relevance
3. In the installation wizard, sometimes I can see the text (like, the EULA), sometimes I can't.
4. The GT730 is rather old and potentially damaged, however, I'm not sure if that could lead to such an error. Also, I didn't have any problems when using it on zorinOS or arch.

I know this is a very confusing problem and most likely very hard to reproduce or solve. I'm not sure how I can provide any logs from the installation process except making photos, but I'll provide anything you need if someone is willing to tackle this issue.

Infact, I did not. Thanks for pointing that out.

However, it did not solve my problem, but it did change the behavior.

Now, instead of crashing and rebooting, the installers freezes completely when attempting to go to the next step. I can still move the mouse, but I can't click any gui elements. I've let it run for ~15 Minutes now and nothing is changing so I'm assuming that it's not going to fix itself.

did you check the usb/iso for damage? i.e. did you verify the checksum ?
if yes, could you try to install over debian? https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Install_Proxmox_VE_on_Debian_11_Bullseye
I did verify the checksum and the USB is perfectly fine, I used it for previous installations of other operating systems.

However, I just tried the installation over debian and it works without issues (even tho the installation was a bit rocky at times). I didn't even know you can install proxmox without the provided ISO, so thanks for pointing that way out.

Very weird problem, but officially solved, thank you so much. :)

I signed up to comment here that I encountered the same issue on one of these Chinese 4x i225 boards from Topton reviewed on STH: https://www.servethehome.com/two-fanless-intel-celeron-n5105-4x-2-5gbe-options-reviewed/ (specifically the MW-JSL2.5G-4L) but thought this might apply for other Jasper Lake systems, too.

Searching for solutions I came across this post.

After installing (successfully) via Debian 11, I then ended up with a system that locked up basically immediately after showing the prompt to finish configuration on the web. When I had a display attached I would see random colors flickering on the screen before the system would reboot after a few seconds. Without a display connected the lockups remained.

I found that booting with the "nomodeset" kernel parameter resolved the issue for the installed system as well as the 7.2-1 installer (though the installer then fails to start X and can't continue). I thought this might help someone else in the same situation.

I just got a HUNSN Jasper Lake N5105 unit and have had similar issues with the 7.1 and 7.2 VE Installs. The "nomodeset" got me through the install, but as soon as the system rebooted, it was back to a blank screen and a reboot loop. How can I get Proxmox VE to install and run on this new hardware - What can I do to make "nomodeset" part of the boot routine and is this the right thing to do. What is frustrating is I can load pfSense and Debain 11 on this hardware with no issues. I want Proxmox to be my hypervisor for these other installs. I am new with Linux so any guidance would be appreciated.

You'll get in initially in the same way (press e, add nomodeset), then edit /etc/default/grub, adding nomodeset behind the default parameter (I think it's "quiet"), then do a sudo update-grub.

However, while this gets you into the host I found on my N5105 that with the proxmox kernel I *have* to have a display connected on HDMI or else it crashes. On Debian 11 it works just fine. One possible workaround to that was to disable RC6 (graphics sleep) somehwere deep in bios settings, which let the host boot without display attached, but then my power draw increased by 2 Watt which I didn't like...

This may have something to do with my boot drive... I found that booting off a SATA disk I don't have to do any of these workarounds (even the installer works!) and it works fine running headless. My issues before were on a SATA disk. YMMV
