Installation problem Proxmox Mail Gateway 3.1 on VmWare ESXi 4.1

I try to install Proxmox Mail Gateway 3.1 on VmWare ESXi 4.1
Hardware:

• Xeon 2,8 x 2 (64 bit), motherboard Intel SE7520JR23S, BIOS SE7520JR23 Version 10.00, Build 0087, Intel(R) RAID Controller SRCZCRX
• another variant is HP ProLiant ML350 G5

According to the docs Mail Gateway 3.1 should run on 32-bit.

Proxmox Mail Gateway 2 was successfully installed, but Mail Gateway 3.1 gives (on both hardware)
"This kernel required x86-64 Cpu but only detected an i686 Cpu"
How to solve the problem?

3.x and later requires 64-bit - which document says the opposite (if there is one, it needs to be corrected).
