Greetings, i was trying to install ProxMox Mail Gateway (free version),on a HP Proliant ML115, Dual Core AMD 64 Opteron, 1024 MB RAM, nVidia Chipset and integrated graphic card, no sucess. I tried using a dedicated graphic card (nVidia GeForce7300LE, pci express) but no luck.
I tried both versions, 2.1 and 2.2 after hitting enter key at boot prompt, the linex kernel starts decompressing, after that i got a blank screen with no text.

I also tried booting the server with its own Diagnostic Utility CD (booteable linux based), but i got this message after kernell decrompression:
"Unknow interrupt or fault at EIP ....."
But using another Diagnostic Utility CD, the one that came with a Proliant ML110 G4 (bootable linux based), the server started showed the gui as expected (1024*728, 16 bits i think).
Finally i installed windows 2k3 (everything ran whitout problems) so i guess there are no hardware problems. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,

The Proxmox Mail Gateway Kernel does not run on AMD 64 Opteron.

I suggest you try to install ProxmoxVE on this box (runs on amd64) and then run the Mail Gateway as a Virtual Appliance. This way is certified and fully supported.

Hi again,
I installed the ProxmoxVE and then uploaded the mailgateway appliance and configured it. Everything worked fine but i noticed two things, i wasn't be able to change the ip configuration of the mailgateway, the web interface didn't let me edit them (gateway and mask were read only and showing wrong values for my network). I tried to edit them by hand creating the /etc/network/interfaces.template file but the mailgateway didnt boot properly (without ip address).

Yesterday i tested the virtual appliance by sending and receiving email from my domain to hotmail and yahoo address and everything worked well, so i decided to put it on production. But today during the morning, the mailgateway stoped proccessing the emails, taking a look at mail queue i found this message on all the emails queued
SMTP RESULT: connect to 127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1]: Connection refused
I'm affraid of losing all the mail sent and received yesterday

I don't have idea whats wrong, cause i used the same configuration from a previous installation on a pentium III machine (2.1 version), my old installation worked without problem.

That behaviour is intended, and the values for gateway and mask are correct (special case for virtual network device venet).

A quick guess is a memory problem - you need at least 1GB - how much did you assign?

Hi,
The box has just 1 gb of RAM, so i created a virtual machine with 768 MB of RAM. This virtual machine, Proxmox MailGateway, is the only virtual machine running on this box.
The orginally idea was using the proliant ml115 as a mail gateway, but since proxmox mail gateway can't run on amd 64 i installed proxmoxVE on it.

Memory usage on box:Physical Memory (1003MB/551MB)
Memory usage on virtual machine: Memoria RAM (768MB/433MB)

Should i assing more RAM to the virtual machine?

My old pentium III was able to handle all the e-mail with 512 MB RAM

On ProxmoxVE, the RAM setting for OpenVZ guests include swap space.

so I assume your ProxmoxVE host can give about 2 GB to guests (1 GB physical memory and 1 GB swap space - for the actual size of your swap space see the admin interface of ProxmoxVE)

so it is no problem to give your Proxmox Mail Gateway 1024 mb.

Thank you so much, i want to put the server back to production, so i decided to flush all the emails queued (more than 600), the users received their emails, but i noticed the "Filter" service stoped working, from what i read in forums i know it's a RAM issue... so i assigned 1024 RAM to it.

Thanks again, great support.
