Hello folks,

PVE 6 on Debian 10 Buster
Backup server with Debian 12 Bookwork

I need to upgrade PVE6 to 8, and so Debian 10 to 12, and I decided to install Proxmox backup to help me with this.

Do I need both backup server and client, if so which version on with server?

Will Proxmox backup also save my PVE config?

Cheers

No. Only the guests. But its possible to use the proxmox-backup-client to backup any file/folder/block device. So you could use that to backup the config files. But this has to be done manually. There is no out-of-the-box host backup yet.
For backing up the host backup the "/etc" and "/var/lib/vz" folders and read this: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Proxmox_Cluster_File_System_(pmxcfs)#_recovery

PVE6/PBS1 = Debian 10
PVE7/PBS2 = Debian 11
PVE8/PBS3 = Debian 12

PVE/PBS will already come with the backup client. You don'T need the client to backup your guests via webUI.

I need to upgrade PVE6 to 8, and so Debian 10 to 12, and I decided to install Proxmox backup to help me with this.
Then follow both guides and really do EVERY step:
https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Upgrade_from_6.x_to_7.0
https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Upgrade_from_7_to_8

And don't continue in case complains about removing the proxmox-ve package.

Danke Dunuin!

Just to confirm I can install the latest server and make it to work with PVE6 client, so I can backup everything for the PV6 to 8's upgrade.

Cheers

I should have search that, great post.

Because I'm going to install the latest backup server, do a full PVE6 backup and upgrade from PVE6 to PVE8, am I wrong if I say that backing up the root namespace just in case something goes wrong with the upgrade is still ok?

But after the upgrade is done, I'll have to re-configure and re do all backups to support all new features.

The backup will be done with PVE2 and PBS3, anything goes wrong with the upgrade I could directly install PVE8 and restore the entire namespaces in one hit. As I understand this should work (best effort).

Cheers
