Installation Failed on DL580 Gen9

I'm trying to install Proxmox VE on a ProLiant DL580 Gen9. The server's front bays are connected to a Smart Array P830i, in IT/HBA mode. Secure Boot is disabled. It can boot into and run the installer all the way to the end. But after the automatic reboot, the server can't boot Proxmox VE. Instead, the server keeps giving a "no bootable devices found" error. I've attempted this multiple times, and this is where I almost always get stuck.

I'm not sure if this is relevant, but I've been trying to use all 10 of the front bays in a RAIDz10. The front bays are all SAS SSDs. Please correct me if this is unsupported.

A few hours ago, I ran the installer (in debug mode) and checked to see if the expected ZFS pool got created. I then checked to see if the bootloader(s) were installed. The Linux Boot Manager shows up, multiple times, in the Boot Device options. But the server still won't boot into Proxmox VE. I'm starting to wonder if the P830i just can't perform this task.

Has anyone else successfully installed and booted Proxmox VE on the DL580 Gen9, with ZFS-on-root, using the P830i?

If I end up needing to switch to an HBA (ie., the H240), I have no issue with that. The only wrinkle is that doing so may be a few months out. The DL580 Gen9's front bays use "Wide Mini-SAS" / "DoubleWide SAS" connectors, which requires a cable kit to connect to any normal HBA. Can't seem to find it in-stock anywhere.

Hi,

If I'm not mistaken, P420i & P830i cannot boot in HBA mode, you need to have the boot disk directly on the motherboard or other devices which are not connected to the Smart Array.

We have this issue in Gen8/Gen9 and that is why we ditch the gen8/9 of HPE to run PVE/PBS.

Best regards,

Thanks for letting me know.

I'll look into a suitable HBA, since the P830i won't be able to handle booting in HBA mode.

Hoping that HPE has addressed this in their Gen10 servers.

Hi,

I confirm that Gen10 works, we have 2 PBS running on DL360 Gen10.

It's a "know issue" with these cards on Gen8/9 and it's "normal" for HPE for what I have seen on their forum.

Best regards,

Buy a cheap LSI HBA and matching cable and you're set.
That's how we setup our servers with mdadm instead of HPE proprietary RAID Controller.

I wish that would work. But the front bays on the DL580 Gen9 use a weird connector.

I'll have a few options to consider:
  • wait for the cable kit (adapts "Wide Mini-SAS" / "DoubleWide SAS" to standard SAS connectors)
    • then connect the (10) front bays to an H240 (or supported LSI HBA), bypassing the P830i
  • use some (2) of the drives in traditional RAID1 for a boot partition/volume
    • and leave the other (8) drives for VM and ISO storage
  • use all (10) of the drives in traditional RAID5/6, for combined boot partition/volume and VM/ISO storage
There are other potential options, but I'd rather use an HBA either way now.
