Hello

I'm about to rent a dedicated server from a hoster. They can provide Debian OS to use with the dedicated server. But since they won't let me install my own operating system or the bare metal proxmox os, how can I still use Proxmox VE? Can I use the existing Debian OS to install Proxmox on?

Thank you for your help guys!!

Its not a supported way but some user figured it out.

Our installer partitions the hard drive with LVM2 with space for snapshots. If you install on top of an existing system I assume you do not get this in the right way.

Currently we are working on the move to Lenny and as soon as we finished this we will try to publish a guide to install Proxmox VE on a existing Lenny system.

you can expect this in a few weeks.

Hi

I have done a PVE-installation on a Debian/Etch-system because
PVE does not support RAID with the standard-iso.

I. Install the most simple Debian/Etch with RAID as you like an provide
space for /var/lib/vz.

II. Install the PVE-Kernel

III. Update the initrd that comes with the kernel

update-initramfs -k 2.6.24-2-pve -u -t -v

IV. Reboot the system.

V. Install the rest of the PVE-packages.

VI. Just to be sure. Reboot again.

VII. Keep Smiling

Hi Christian

Thank you for your reply.

Sounds interessting. I'm about to rent a root Server, which has the following configuration:

- Core 2 Quad 2.4 GHz
- 4 GB RAM
- 2x 500 GB HD's with Software Raid 1 (done by OS)
- Debian 64bit (etch possible)

Is this system suitable for 3-4 smaller linux webservers?

I'm pretty new to Proxmox VE and I was thinking to let some specialist to install that. Is there a way you could do this for my maschine based on what you have described? I will pay for it, you just have to tell me how much.

If you interessted please send me mail to phil at wwwroot . ch

Thanks
Phil

one more question if forgot to ask:

Is the Proxmox VE upgradeable if I use my own debian system like you have described? Upgradeable the same way with bare metal host?
