Install problem

Just checked the md5 checksum and the downloaded iso doesn't match what is listed on the Web page???

Oops, my mistake...it does.

SUCCESS!! Finally via dvd disk. Don't know why it didn't work previously but burned a fresh disk and so far so good.

Stranger and stranger....I'm starting to think this motherboard has lost the plot. I put my proxmox install into a USB caddy and tested it on a laptop and it booted fine. Put it back on my pc and no boot device detected but the hdd is seen in bios.

I notice when I try to boot the usb it searches /dev/sdb and fails to find iso but when it installs from dvd it searches /dev/sd0 and launches OK.

I have very similar issue on Asus Crosshair VIII Hero (Wi-Fi) motherboard with Ryzen 9 3900x, drive is nvme ssd.

I'm trying to setup latest PVE on my bare metal.

After attempting installation it gives

Loading Proxmox VE Installer ...
Loading initial ramdisk ...

and then freezes.

Here's the list of everything I've tried:
-Rufus (regular and DD mode), Etcher, Ventoy
-different usb keys and ports
-different pve versions (checked hashes every time)
-different gpus
-toggling uefi boot in bios

The machine installs other os okay.
And I have no idea how to proceed.
I hope my problems are related to this thread.

Yes it's a real pain, I can also install other os software. I installed debian 11 yesterday just to test I could install and boot from the hdd. The annoying thing is, I had proxmox installed once on this hdd via USB and needed to reinstall it but cannot seem to do so. Like you I've tried ide, raid, Uefi, no Uefi, dd on usb, no dd (which results in the usb booting but unable to find the iso to boot) and last of all just as I thought I was winning, dvd install which has installed but my motherboard won't boot it just like it won't boot a dd usb.

So it's not only because my motherboard is old, it effects newer systems like yours too.
Why can't the software be formated to load like any other? I'm on the verge of giving up as It's a ridiculous amount of time and effort to get a software to install and boot.

I completely agree.
It's absurd one has to troubleshoot before install even begins, Proxmox being so known and all, and on a common hardware too.
Anyhow, what alternatives are you considering?

It's really strange. The first old socket 775 with g33 chipset had no problem installing proxmox. However, g33 chipset is not compatible with passthrough, so as I'm just experimenting at the moment, I bought a g35 chipset socket 775 mb. It's an intel mb. Thought I would have an easy install as before. Wasn't expecting no install problems.
I guess I will have to consider buying an old Dell server to continue my experiments.
