Install on Z87 MB

I am attempting to evaluate Proxmox VE 3.0 VS 0Xenserver 62. I am not able to install Proxmox VE on a new system. The system gets to the point where it has “Booting the system… Press F2 for verbose mod.” and then locks-up.

I am able to start the install process of Debian 7.1 “Wheezy” up to the point where it is looking for the Nic drivers. I can install the drivers manually.

The network drivers will most likely need to be installed manually Proxmox VE due to them being so new. Intel e1000e Ver 2.2.14 or better. Can the Nic driver be manually installed?

System information:
MB: ASROCK Z87 Extreame6
CPU: Intel I7-4770k
Memory: 32GB
Ethernet controller 1: I217-V
Ethernet controller 2: I211


I am able to install centos 6.4 on the server and can connect to the network on both ports.
 
I think you're swimming a bit upstream there mate. That PHY was launched Q4-2013 ( http://ark.intel.com/products/70831/ ), and I'm not even sure if it's in the kernel that proxmox uses just yet. However, it is odd that it hangs and doesn't let you fully boot.

If you have an expansion NIC you can use for now, perhaps disabling them in the BIOS is a good idea.

I'm not sure what you're hoping to accomplish with your VM project here, but if it's for anything production (actually making money for example), you would probably see a more reliable implementation using an intel NIC that has actual offloading. I can't speak for this exact model you have here (even the non "-v" variant), but most motherboards, let alone consumer motherboards from ASRock do not properly off-load TCP.

An additional point to consider is what if you need to reinstall proxmox, how hard is it going to be to get this working again?

Really though I am rather surprised you're having this kind of problem, but considering this is a virtualization distro and not a desktop distro, the kernel versioning typically progresses slower due to stability testing and development.

Assuming you can get into a booted environment you should be able to get it going, but with some elbow grease (intel has downloads for linux for this PHY series btw).

there are newer drivers available (http://sourceforge.net/projects/e1000/files/e1000e stable/2.4.14/), we will include them in V3.1
