I'm installing PVE 7.2-1 on a Dell Poweredge R710 from a USB key. I'm attempting to set up a BTRFS RAID1 on 2 drives as the OS, and I have 6 other drives which will be a RAIDZ-2. When attempting to install, I get the following error:

"FATAL ERROR:writer: failed to read/uncompress file /target/usr/sbin/cgdisk"
"command 'unsquashfs -f -dest /target -i /cdrom/pve-base.squashfs' failed with exit code 1 at /usr/bin/proxinstall line 466"

I've googled and seen that maybe disabling the CDROM (which I'm not using) could fix it, but I did that in the BIOS and it didn't help. I've tried UEFI and Legacy (though I prefer Legacy). Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot this? Is it installing from USB: is the issue that i need to install from CDROM?

This is kind of insane but I found a workaround. I burned a copy of the DVD, put it in the drive, booted off the USB, and it installed fine first try.

My guess would be that part of the data on the USB was corrupted and the installer detected the DVD (before it found the USB, after booting from the USB) and used it for the actual installation.

Maybe, I checksummed it and it looked good. My initial theory was that based on the error it was trying to pull something off a hard-coded CD-ROM path, so by making that available it could complete that step and continue as expected. That's why I tried it but I have no idea if that was an accurate assessment of what actually went on.

The installer looks for the installation media (CDROM or USB) and always puts it under the cdrom path (regardless of the actual media). It's strange that it behaves this way for your specific system (as I think other people with R710's did not need an additional optical disk). Anyway, glad you got it working!
