ifupdown2 updated, new /etc/network/interfaces

network config changes have been detected for ifupdown2 compatibility.
Saved in /etc/network/interfaces.new for hot-apply or next reboot.

will this mess up my next reboot? I have no need to hot-apply anything.

No the plan is the contrary, than in situation wher the next reboot would be messed up this fixes it.
Normally this is just rewriting to current syntax and fixing OVS issues with the new OVS plugin for ifupdown2 @spirit made.

But well, just checkout the actual changes yourself: diff -u /etc/network/interfaces /etc/network/interfaces.new

Yes, I did diff and it worried me. I tried to PM you the diff, @t.lamprecht, but it doesn't allow me.

Seems just ok, only switches over from deprecated separate netmask entry to CIDR notation.

ok, i will mark as resolved, as I understand the link above this is intentional (keep in mind proxmox handles only vmbr0/1, the only physical adapter plugged in is hooked up to a pfsense VM)
