I just bought some old HP DL360p servers with E5-2660 CPUs. Each server come with two CPUs.

1- Can I run it on Turbo at all times somehow?
2- Would that be bad? (I don't care for power consumption)

Thanks,

No this will be managed by the bios firmware.

Yes it would rise the power consumption and the main problem is the temperature this is why it is firmware controlled

I don't know what generation of DL360 you use, but we run into problems with the power management of the bios and crashes 3 years ago (on RHEL). HP suggested to run in high performance mode all the time. We changed it and we never had any crash on that system.

Hi LnxBil, how did you change it to run on Turbo mode at all times? I am interested to do the same as this is not overclocking and should be supported. I have DL360p Gen 8.

Thanks for the input LnxBil. I don't see this feature as ON or OFF in Bios. Can you please let me know where you set this?
you cannot run "turbo" all the time; thats not what its for. For information on what "turbo" is and how it work, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Turbo_Boost. most importantly, turbo boost is nearly useless for virtualization as it only works on a single core which means your performance is unpredictable.

LnxBil was describing the setting the hardware power management profile. While I'm not as versed in HPs implementation, this link should help explain how that works in general.
