How to replace a defective HDD in a ZFS pool

Hello,

we have a server with a ZFS pool (raidz1-0). A HDD is defective and needs to be replaced.
Is there anything important to consider when swapping a HDD? Do I have to run any ZFS commands on the physical server? Should I swap the HDD first before running those commands?

For non-root disks it's pretty straight forward, if this is the root pool where the host boots from be sure to check the section below describing how to setup the bootloader on the replacement.
