How to remove node from cluster?

I'm wondering what is the proper way to remove a node from cluster in Proxmox2?
It used to be quite easy when all we had to do was stop the service and edit the cluster config file.

reinstall the node (to be sure all cluster related data is deleted).

What do you want to do exactly? replace hardware? shrink cluster?

Just get rid of the extra hardware that still shows red on the "Server view" but infact does not exist anymore.

rm /etc/pve/nodes/<nodename> -Rf

On ALL of the nodes?
Yikes. I'm going to have to write some kind of script for that.

No (/etc/pve/ is a replicated file system)
