How to create a PVE admin user?

I've tried this several ways and keep getting problematic results.

I created a group Admins, then applied Group Permissions of Path = / and Role = Administrator.
Created a testuser@pve, Group = Admins.
I can log into the GUI but can't ssh in (permission denied)

I tried doing the CLI method with pveum and got further. That user could ssh in but the CLI prompt was only a $. Not the expected user@host:dir.

Is there a walkthrough to create a PVE admin user with ssh access that has the right prompt?


There has to be something simple I am missing. I've tried so many combinations that I am starting to confuse myself.

ssh can only be used by system users (pam realm)

this is determined by the 'shell' options of the user (can be modified with 'usermod', see 'man usermod' )
