Hallo dear community!

I've recently taken on the challenge of integrating iSCSI Lefthand Storage with ZFS file system into a Proxmox cluster, and I'm wondering if anyone could share their experience or suggestions regarding the best, easiest, and appropriate way to achieve this.

I have a few specific questions:

  1. Has anyone attempted this type of connection before and has proven steps to share?
  2. What is the best practice for configuring iSCSI on Lefthand Storage in the context of Proxmox?
  3. Are there any special considerations for configuring ZFS in the Proxmox cluster to optimize performance and reliability?
  4. What is the best way to configure ZFS via iSCSI on Cluster and share it to all nodes?
Thanks in advance for any tips and advice! I'd like to avoid pitfalls, so I appreciate any helpful information.

I suspect you dont have many options. PVE is based on Debian Linux with Ubuntu derived Kernel. Your Vendor's best practices for Linux is what you should use.

Dont use ZFS if you intend to use the SAN as shared storage, they are not compatible with each other.

If you are thinking of ZFS over iSCSI, I dont believe it would work with your SAN. Such setup only works for SAN systems that are based on Linux/FreeBSD and allow you to SSH directly into SAN so you can manage ZFS _on_ the SAN. The ZFS is then exported as iSCSI as needed. Its not something you can do with LeftHand, afaik.

If you intend to use your existing SAN infrastructure, then your primary choice for managing shared iSCSI storage is by implementing LVM Thick on top of it.

Good luck.

Allow me to help make it easier to digest: what your filer does internally has no obvious effect on the guests. in other words, it doesnt matter that your filer uses zfs underneath, it serves raw block devices to the connected guests. using iscsi with proxmox is supported and relatively straightforward- see https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Storage:_iSCSI

you may also want to set up and use multipathing. While not covered in the above documentation, you can see the man pages for multipathd and/or search this forum for documentation and howtos.
