host not booting after update to 4.3-70

installation went fine and as there is a new kernel, the system wanted to be rebooted. Unfortunately, the machine does not boot after the update. It hangs shortly after bios starts to boot from disk. Looks like boot record is not okay.
I formatted whole systems as ZFS. I have the possibility to boot the machine to a rescue system to fix things. Any ideas what went wrong?

"shortly after bios starts to boot" => does this mean you don't even see the grub menu? in that case, I would try booting from a rescue environment and reinstalling grub. the updated packages don't change anything about the grub on the mbr..
