Unfortunately, I don't see a way out of this purchase. I picked up a TopTon Mini PC (12th Gen w/N100) from AliExpress in 09/2024. I installed a single Crucial 32GB DDR5 4800MHz SoDIMM and a 1TB NVME and called it a day. It ran until about 01/2025 (5-6 months) with no issues on Proxmox 8.3.2, running only one VM — pfSense 2.7.2.
Since mid-January (a month ago), I've experienced nothing but headaches. Coincidentally, the issues started right after a kernel update from 6.5.x to 6.8.4-12 and Proxmox 8.3.3.
Since the issues began, I've:
- Replaced the 1TB NVME
- Run multiple memory tests for days (all passed)
- Applied new thermal paste to the CPU
- Reinstalled Proxmox and reconfigured it
- Applied the latest microcode updates from the non-free repo
- Switched from PCI Passthrough of NICs to VirtIO and then Intel 1000E virtualization
- Adjusted the CPU limits and settings
- Tweaked IOMMU kernel flags
- Removed the WiFi PCIe card altogether
- Installed Netdata for monitoring
- Migrated the VM to another host, where it ran without issues
- Ran various stress tests with stress-ng and fio
- Attempted to reach out for a BIOS update
At this point, I'm about to throw the unit in the bin and call it a loss. Out of curiosity, I installed pfSense directly on it to see if it would last longer than a few days. That was earlier today. I’ve had my suspicions that the NICs were the issue, and that seems to ring true so far, but I’ll have to see. It seems that if I switch to the virtualized NICs (Intel 1000), it doesn’t crash — at least, not in the short period I had them on, but I haven't been able to run them for long yet.
I’ve had random reboots with it. At times, I could’ve sworn they were happening on Sundays or when temps were higher, but after weeks of troubleshooting, I still haven’t been able to pinpoint a direct cause.
In the end, I don’t think it’s worth the hassle of spending all this time trying to debug it. I’ve thought about reverting to the old kernel, but that would only be a temporary fix; at some point, I’ll want to upgrade. I wish I had read some of these posts before purchasing it. It’s not crazy expensive, but it’s honestly junk and not worth it. Go with a UniFi or Netgate appliance, or even an HP/Dell/Lenovo mini PC with a 4-port PCIe card.
