Hi,

I am trying to turn an old computer into a Proxmox host, but struggling with stability. After a periode (varies, can be minutes, sometimes hours) I lose contact with the host, even with no guest VMs or containers running. I've tried running the Memtest included, which successfully passes.

Hardware: AMD 5900X, MB MSI MAG X570 Tomahowk, 64 GB DDR43600.

When the freezing occurs, I cannot ping the host, and the console freezes completely (at login screen, no messages on the terminal).

Does anybody have any advise on how to stabilize the system?

I've tried both PVE 8.2 and 7.4, and while it feels that 7.4 is stable for longer it still freezes up eventually after a few hours.

Hello, did you try the latest kernel? The ISO for version 8.2 runs Kernel 6.8.4-2 which is known for causing freezes in some specific setups. One has to manually update via

Code:
apt update && apt full-upgrade

to get the latest kernel version.

I have not tried upgrading the kernel yet, I was however able to stabilize it (somewhat) by disabling C-states in the UEFI settings on the MB.

I had this same thing happen to a recent install. It only started when I turned on 2 VMs. One was a Windows 11 environment that I struggled to get working with cpu type 'host', but finally did. The other is a linux application that is very disk i/o intensive. Once I started both these workloads, the system would freeze every few seconds. Ping to VMs and Server would timeout, RDP to Windows would freeze, etc.. then it would recover. I will try installing again and updating the Kernel.
