Hello,

on Proxmox VE my plan is to run the following VMs for private use only:
  • Docker
    • Portainer
    • UniFi Controller
    • GitLab
    • Webserver (private use)
    • Zoneminder
  • Plex
  • 2x Win10 (low load)
  • Proxmox Mail Gateway (maybe)
  • FreePBX
  • Linux VM (only as playground)
The system shall only contain:
  • the mainboard (Supermicro preferred)
  • CPU (with iGPU für Plex transcoding)
  • RAM (ECC preferred)
  • two mirrored SSDs (for the Proxmox system)
All the VM data shall be accesses via 10 GBit/s network (SFP+ preferred) and NFS.

Is it possible to run such a system with an idle power consumption of around 40 watts?
If "yes", could you recommend a CPU (Atom? Xeon-D? Xeon E3? Xeon E?)?
If "no", could you roughly estimate what idle power consumption is minimally required to run this setup?

Thanks,

Thomas

40W will be hard for that load. Here my X10 E3/E5 Supermicro boards will consume around 20W when the system is shutdown and just with IPMI running. Powered on an idling in TrueNAS the E3 boards will consume around 80-100W, the E5 100+W. But they all also got 6-15 drives which adds to the power consumption.

Did you see the Supermicro Atom Boards?

Also keep in mind that Zoneminder should do most stuff in software without hardware accelleration so that could eat alot if CPU power too. And Win10 always got alot of idle load. So I don't know if a slow atom will do the job. I personally just upgraded from a 8 core E5 to a 16 core E5 because I got too much vCPUs per physical Core allocated to VMs.
