We are looking to purchase a 64 bit 1U Dell server to become a standard machine for Proxmox hosting. This hardware will work with our existing SAN (iSCSI) and as we typically need to get about 5 of these units, we would prefer to get ex-surplus hardware (ie. not current models) due to budgets.
Basically I need a box that can handle as much memory as possible (ideally 32gb), multi-socket CPUs, multi-core, and ideally with onboard SATA RAID (although we could put RAID adapters in there if needed). We have been using SC1425 machines over the years, but they are not compatible with 64 bit operation that Proxmox requires and therefore we can't use KVM on there.
We do have some Poweredge 2950 machines that work well, but they are 2U and I have a limited space availability at our colo center for them. So I basically need something equivalent but in a 1U configuration.
I trust other people's experience over any manufacturer specs, so I thought I'd post to see if anyone had a 'favorite' old Dell 1U server configuration that they have used that would meet these specs with Proxmox.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Myles
