Hi, I am a newbie with proxmox. I have a HP Proliant server (2 XEON, 24 cores and 32Gb RAM) with 2xSAS SSD 120Gb and 3xSAS 1.2Tb.
I would like to make a RAID1 with the two SSD drives (to install PVE) and a RAID5 with the three 1.2 Tb drives. (to install the VMs). What is the best option? RAID by Hardware or by Software?

And what would be the appropriate size to install proxmox in the RAID of the SSD? All 120Gb? Or would 64Gb be enough?

Thank you in advance!

SSD solely for the OS is a waste and better used for improving the performance of everything. I recommend using ZFS raidz1 with the 3 spinners and use the two SSD as raid 1 special device for ZFS metadata and then put the OS and other "need-to-be-fast" stuff on the SSDs. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to do this with the installer yet. You'll get even more performance if you add another spinner and run them in RAID10 configuration.

Hi LnxBil!
first of all, thank you for your answer!
Is hard to find info about the metadata special device (I'm very noob :-) ). Do you know where I can find a good link or tutorial for it?
Thank you and best regards!
