I have 8 SAS hard disk in one physical server. I have the following doubts for setting up
1.how do i set setup these hard disk.
2. how much hard disk should be used while installing PROXMOX VE iso.
3.how to create OSD with these hard disks.
4. can i use raidz1 for OSD.

Thanks!!

Hello!

1. I would recommend a zfs mirror for your system and six disks for vm images.
2, 32 GB are usually enough for the system only. Keep in mind that you might want to upload iso files and that you have to store your vm images somewhere.
3. OSDs means that you're planning to use ceph? They can be created via GUI or commandline
4. OSD is usually a ceph term, so there is no raidz, ceph manages the distribution of data by a so-called CRUSH rule

raidz is not the ideal way of storing vm images, anyway, because there is a lot of overhead created by the parity calculations. Usually you're better off with a striped mirror. With 8 disks you could either use two dedicated disks for the system and arrange the remaining six for the images (as stated above) or you put it all in one pool, which is also possible and is only a hassle if you want to reinstall without losing any vm images (absolutely not impossible, though).

Hi,

Forgot to mention. We have 3 physical servers with the same specifications. 8 *(1TB) * 3 servers= total 24 hard disks.
i want to create cluster with 3 servers and configure ceph.
While creating OSD , i am getting " No Disks Unused".

During my tests with VMs I also encountered this problem. Wasn't able to solve it quickly, but it is probably related to existing file system signatures on your disks.

i found the solution. There were partitions created on all the hard disks. Just deleted the partitions and hard disks got listed.
