Gui login says password incorrect but CLI works

For no apparent reason we can pull up the GUI login which we have always used root and PAM auth, says login incorrect, However, CLI works fine. Please advise on what the fix may be. Thank you!

Whats going on with:

auto vmbr0
iface vmbr0 inet static
    address 192.168.0.5/24

and

# cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.1.125 pve.nmi.local pve

I appreciate your reply, can you elaborate on what you mean by your post?

Your hosts file contains a different IP than the one that is configured on the interface. This possibly implies that at some point you have changed networking on your host but did not update all the dependencies.

Since PVE web ui (and other services) depend on consistent network configuration, its not surprising that you are seeing strange/non-working results.

We inherited this setup. Still learning and need to update to the newer version. In the meantime, what do you suggest as far as updating the dependencies?

Well I'd start with: On what IP address is the CLI in fact available? Assuming that is the correct IP address for the host, adjust the network configs accordingly.

In addition to :
/etc/network/interfaces
/etc/hosts

I would check:
/etc/hostname
output of: hostnamectl

If its a cluster, check: /etc/pve/corosync.conf

After everything has been checked and is confirmed consistent, you may want to restart PVE services:
systemctl try-reload-or-restart pvedaemon pveproxy pvestatd pvescheduler

Note this will not affect running VMs.
