I am fairly new to this and much of the content about low level details is confusing to me.

I've been spending way too much time trying to get GPU passthrough to work for an guest Ubuntu 20.04 vm. I have read the many many tutorials and threads on this topic. Each one is slightly different and have tried different permutations. The one that got me closest to working was this.

If someone can help me, I'll get you a coffee.

Note: Yes, I know I am using old equipment. But it is just sitting around so why let it go to waste.

So basic lay of the land:
- I am using an old laptop for Proxmox exclusively.
- Intel core i7 3740QM
- 24GB RAM
- NVIDIA Quadro K1000M
- 240GB SSD

I am trying to deploy an Ubuntu server 20.04 vm in Proxmox that can use the GPU.

I followed the guide above and got to the end. The first time it gave me an error "Unable to determine the device handle for GPU [...]: Unknown Error". Then at some point I could no longer restart the machine. Each time I tried to start it, Proxmox gave me a "Error: Start failed: QEMU exited with code 1" and would not restart. I deleted it and created a new one. This time when I got to the end it tells me "No devices were found". Now again after trying to reboot I got the same Proxmox "start failed" error.

The NVIDIA drivers I was using was 390.

I was hoping to be able to deploy a guest vm and then use snapshots or backups to revert to a previous state and try other permutations. But each time this "start error" is delaying me again. It seems to be connected to the PCI hardware in the vm because when I remove it, it seems to work again.

Let me know what other details are needed and please be as explicit as possible in your ask. Like if you ask for a certain export, please include the command for it.

Thanks in advance!
