GPU fan spins up when shutting down VM

Hello,

Well I finally did it, everything is virtualize. So on my latest project I installed proxmox on my main computer. Ryzen 7 3700x 64 gig ram and 2 x gtx 1060 6GB versions.

Installed windows 11 for gaming purposes so that kid can game while I do my stuff. Passed through 1 of gpus and it's working flawlessly.

Installed Linux Mint for my own use, passed through 2nd gpu and it almost working flawlessly too, only issue I have is when I turn off my Mint VM, gpu fan spins up to full speed or almost full speed, I can hear it loud and clear.

That is not the case with windows installation. So my question is have anyone experienced something like this??

On proxmox side of things I'm using vfio drivers and I can see that both Gpus are using vfio drivers when I look it up with lspci - v and on VM side of things I'm using Nvidia drivers.

GPU is not spinning like that when I reboot proxmox server.

Thanks for all if any answers. :)

Looks like the drives leaves the GPU in a certain configuration with high fan speed or high-power mode. Once the VM is shut down, there is no driver loaded for the GPU and it's not put in a low-power mode. That last part is very command (but it does not always results in fan noise).
Either unbind vfio-pci and bind the actual driver for the GPU (there are examples on the forum) or start a small VM (xan be automated by hookscripts) that has no other job than to put the GPU in power savings mode.

Not sure how to actually do that as those two gpus are identical, but okay I'm gonna try to mess around with drivers in my Mint installation, perhaps there are some drivers that have different behavior on shutdown. If that's not the case I'm gonna research with light vm... Perhaps it's possible with lxc?
