My dedicated server provider install proxmox for me, so I'm up and running as a first time proxmoxer. I wasn't able to find any details resource for configuration and use recommendations, and I did check the wiki. However I am ordering the book recently released, but that's longer term investment, I need advice on set-up now.

First thing I've noticed is the default install used a whopping 60GB, I only have raid1 250G SSD so this is a lot. I will be using external R1Soft backups so not sure if I really need that space for anything, perhaps just a backup of the proxmox base and no VMs, still that would only take a couple of GB. I would like to hear others thoughts on this and if I can live resize it or will have to request a fresh reinstall?

Currently I run a single mysql server in a LXC container for all clients, I'm thinking of continuing this except putting into a KVM for better resource protection if loads get higher. Would other recommend this or a different approach?

Finally I was surprised to not find a good hardening guide, I found bits here and there but not overall wiki entry that includes a nice set of default recommended firewall rules etc. Can anyone point me to anything like this?

Lastly its early days, is there any other things a newbie like myself can know to make things smoother?

Thanks

Hello Bedlore,

What do you mean with 60GB? The system itself consumes just 2GB. Maybe you post

Code:
df -h

in order to see clearer what you mean.

Why lxc? Of course you can, but Proxmox supports OpenVZ very well and it´s a proofed solution.

The most important is to have resources ready in order to create Containers and VMs. Default storage is /var/lib/vz/template/cache for container templates (download templates from http://wiki.openvz.org/Download/template/precreated), and /var/lib/vz/template/iso for installation media ISO´s.

Then go into WEB GUI, select "Create CT" or "Create VM" on top right of the portal, play around and enjoy!

Kind regards
