Get ideas to config hard drives

Hi!

I'd like to get ideas how to configure 6 x 1TB hard drives, 2 x 500gb hard drives, and 1 x 650gb hard drive.

What type of raid would be wise to use? Or any other style of config I haven't thought of.

Thanks

Use the three 500GB ones to run the Proxmox host in a 3-way mirror and to store ISO's and templates. It's 3 times the read performance/redundancy and it does not need to be a fast writer. Sell the other drives and get 2 of the largest second-hand enterprise SSD's you can for the VMs to get decent IOPS so they don't interfere too much with each other. (Or keep the HDD's for backups on another system and buy enterprise SSDs anyway.)

I would first test a raid10 of all HDDs, except for the 650GB one. You then get 3.5TB and the best performance possible with these disks. If thats still not enough get some enterprise SSDs (and yes, they cost way more than consumer SSDs when bought new).

I got my 6 x 1TB for a handful of dollars. How can I perform a RAID 10 in proxmox when the system does not offer it to me. From head, I think it stops at Raid-Z3

Thats not what Raidz3 means.

ZFS Speek = Traditional Raid Speek
Mirror = Raid1
Stripe = Raid0
Striped Mirror = Raid10
Raidz1 = Raid5
Raidz2 = Raid6
Raidz3 = like a Raid6 but with 3 parity disks

Not sure if that will work using the GUI. If I remember right PVE will complain that those 3 disks aren't the same size. But you can try to do a fresh PVE installation and then choose to use a ZFS mirror and select those two 500GB + the single 650GB disks.

Striped Mirror aka Raid10 should be an Option when installing PVE or when creating a new ZFS pool using the webUI.

I redid an installation as suggested, only, proxmox asks me that the disks are of the same capacity to make a RAID 1. I could only use my 2 hard disks 500Gb and leave my 650 aside.

My mistake, I have 5 and not 6 disks drive of 1Tb. And RAID10 don’t take 6 disks. :(
