Fresh 3.0 Install: root password not accepted

Hi,

on a fresh VE 3.0 (3.0-0428106c-13) I cannot log in (neither by ssh nor on the web frontend) with the root password provided during the installation. The root password is 100% correct. I did the complete installation twice to no avail.

My root password contains special characters ("@" and quotes). Could this be the problem?

Is there a way to reset the root pw w/o having to go through the complete installation again?

Any live cd will do the trick. Boot it and mount your /dev/sdX (X being the drive that the machine boots from and is usually sda). eg mount /dev/sda /mnt
CD into the mountpoint. eg cd /mnt
cd into the etc directory. eg cd etc (you can combine the two steps into cd /mnt/etc)
type in pico shadow.

The very top line should be root.
It will read :

root:some-long-hash-string:a-number

note the line is delimited by colons. remove the some-long-hash-string leaving no spaces between the colons.

Reboot without the livecd.
Login on the command line as root. It won't ask for a password. Immediately change roots password by typing in passwd.

Got the problem: I'm using the US keyboard layout. However the installer doesn't use the plain US layout but some kind of "US International" layout, where single and double quote keys are configured as dead keys to allow for characters with diacritics. IMHO this is a bug. A layout called "US Layout" should be a straight US layout.
