Hello everyone,

I've forgotten the password for my Ubuntu 22.04 VM running on Proxmox VE 8.2.4. I need to reset the password but can't log in.

I've tried accessing the VM console, but since I don't have the password, I can't proceed. What's the best way to reset the password from Proxmox?

Any step-by-step guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Please note; the OP has forgotten a VM password not the PVE hosts one. What bbgeek17 means is, you should adapt the advice given in that wiki for the VM. So for instance to use Method 2 of that wiki, what you will have todo is attach a new live ISO to that VM & boot from it 7 then follow the instructions.
Whichever method you use, you will need to use the in-built console for that VM in the Proxmox WebGUI.

Thank you! I misread the request. My apologies.

No not for a VM. Proxmox knows (almost!) nothing about your passwords in a VM.

But What I would do in your case before attempting to change that password - make sure you have a full & restorable backup of that VM, so if anything goes wrong you can just start again.

Then get a live Ubuntu media, attach to VM, set as boot device for VM & then boot. Then follow online instructions - what to do to change the password.

Edit: I've just seen your success post. Maybe mark this thread as Solved. At the top of the thread, choose the Edit thread button, then from the (no prefix) dropdown choose Solved.
