First Proxmox Container - Help With Internet Access For It

Hi:

I'm attempting to learn a bit about Proxmox and ran into my first snag.

I have a proxmox install set up at a hosting provider. It is a single node with 8 public assigned ip addresses.

I have created my container but having an issue with getting to it from outside the proxmox environment.

The container has a single network device (eth0) and an IPv4 range of 192.168.1.1/24 and a bridge labeled as vmbr0.
I have set the gateway to one of the publicly assigned ip addresses from the hosting provider.
I have set the dns to use the host settings (currently set to 1.1.1.1)

I logged into the container using the proxmox console and tried a ping operation.

The result is a 'temporary failure in name resolution'.

Unfortunately, not sure what might be the issue. I suspect it could be the gateway address but not sure what else I can use there.

I suspect that once I get that resolved, I will have another issue trying to get to the container from outside the proxmox environment but one step at a time I guess.

Any help and ideas greatly appreciated.

PS: I did a search in the forum for 'container and gateway' but I didn't find anything useful for someone at my stage of learning.

For this to work you need to either
a) put a public IP directly on your container (not really recommended for security reasons)
b) route traffic from your container at 192.168.1.1 to the internet.

So b) is the preferred option but there are a number of ways you can do this

the most 'lightweight' solution is to manually add a few extra lines into the network config file on your host - this is talked about here
https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Network_Configuration

the second option involves setting a VM on the proxmox host to manage firewall and routing duties for all the other VM's and containers - an example of this would something like pfSense. The advantage of this is that you then have a GUI interface to setup and manage your network which I would suggest might be a little easier if you're not knowledgeable about networking.

There are plenty of guides online - search for pfSense on Proxmox - but here's a link to a run through from 'Techno Tim' which should help with your journey (it's not directly applicable because he's doing it from a home user perspective but the principal steps will be the same)

Thank you for your response.

My issue turned out to be silly simple:

I just needed to do two things:

1. Change the gateway in the container to the PROXMOX ip address
2. Change the primary ip address in the container to one of the public ip addresses.

Thanks again for the suggestions and pointers!

Could you explain how to solve the problem
I have the same problem and I don't understand how to solve it
