Hi all,

Disclaimer: I'm new to VMs :)

I have ordered Lenovo ThinkServer TS140
and was think to order 1 SSD for OS and maybe 2x3TB HDs for storage. What I do not understand is that how will be able to "share" that storage between different VMs? Do I install ie. FreeNAS and set it up and then that storage can be "shared" between Linux, Windows or on the same network with other window machines? Is it possible to setup so out of those 2 HDs if one dies I can buy ie. new one and replace it but all data will be still there?

I hope my question is not too confusing, just trying to understand how all of it works. Please reply if more clarification is needed.

TIA

you have multiple options:

  • software raid0/1
  • zfs raid0/1
  • if using kvm, you can assign 3 Virtual HDD's to the VM ("os" on SSD, Data1 on HDD1, Data2 on HDD2)
  • Install a single node Ceph Cluster for 2 OSD's ...

and probably more i cant remember right now.

Thanks for taking time to reply!

So, I take it software raid 0/1 and zfs raid0/1 are thru FreeNAS?
Thru KVM I'm assigning HDD's and they can be used by an OS?
Not sure what Ceph Cluster OSD's are.
