Hello Proxmox Community,
I would like to propose an enhancement for virtual disk management in Proxmox VE, aimed at improving infrastructure documentation directly from the Web UI.
Currently, virtual disks are automatically named based on the VM ID (e.g., vm-100-disk-0). When a Virtual Machine has multiple disks attached—such as one for the OS, one for database logs, and others for specific application data—it becomes hard to identify their exact purpose at a glance from the Hardware tab.
I would like to request the following features in the Web UI, which should ideally apply to both ZFS storage (zvols) and file-based storage (such as QCOW2 or RAW files):
1. Custom Disk Renaming (Preferred Solution):
The ability to give virtual disks a custom, descriptive name during creation or via a rename option later on (e.g., "vm-100-db-logs" instead of "vm-100-disk-1"), while keeping Proxmox's underlying storage management intact.
2. Alternative Solution (Tags or Notes):
If renaming the actual volume/file is technically too complex due to backend storage restrictions, it would be incredibly helpful to have a dedicated "Notes", "Description", or "Tag" field for each disk. This information should be editable and visible directly as a column or a tooltip in the VM -> Hardware disk list.
Having this visibility in the GUI would eliminate the need to constantly check inside the guest OS, look at CLI configuration file comments, or guess disk purposes based solely on their size.
Would anyone else find these options useful for managing complex storage setups?
Thank you for your amazing work on Proxmox VE!
