Hi

since this is a very nice SMTP gateway, it would be very convenient to have some kind of client SMTP functionality where you could publish port 587 to the internet where (lets say LDAP) users can authenticate and send E-Mails through the gateway so that one wouldn't have to publish his Exchange Mailserver to the interwebs.

Over and out :)

Regards

PMG is mostly meant to be used as a gateway between the internet and your mail-servers - not so much as MSA (mail submission agent) for users - hence no direct support.

I would suggest to expose the Exchange via VPN only or use a webmail for your end-users.

Some users in the forum have configured PMG to authenticate users using SASL+LDAP.

see:
http://www.postfix.org/SASL_README.html
http://www.postfix.org/LDAP_README.html

for the postfix configuration (or some of the widely used tutorials on the net)

for integration into PMG you have to use the service configuration templates:
https://pmg.proxmox.com/pmg-docs/pmg-admin-guide.html#pmgconfig_template_engine

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the links and infos, will look into it. Like I mentioned in my other thread I'd see a benefit in PMG supporting this feature but of course it is up to the product owner to decide what it is what it isn't. At least one competitor offers this functionality, like I mentioned and for me, that's the only feature I'm missing here (although I can help myself out in other ways).

tbh this feature is more needed (here) for 3rd party stuff which needs to send mail on behalf of me. Routing these mails through my gateway gave me control and logging of every single mail which is being sent which I'd be missing if I'd just enter the 3rd parties IP to my SPF records and let them send what they want.

It is your product, it is great just like it is, I very much appreciate its existence and thank you for the great work that has been done and of course it is your decision, I was just dropping my suggestion here and was hoping you'd consider it in the future, maybe.

Hmm - please open an enhancement request over at https://bugzilla.proxmox.com - That way we have one place where all users which want to see the functionality can say so.

Still think it's more of a niche use-case - but then again - I don't know all of our users' needs.

If many people need this we could consider integrating it - and as always we do welcome patches!

Hi Stoiko,

We also use our clustered PMG's as central MTA's for incoming and outgoing emails and would love the option to have users to be able to use SASL and the already configured LDAP/AD within PMG.

This would allow external power users to use the PMG's as authenticated smtp relay servers, to send out emails from their development systems. Which has become more of an issue for us, since the recent 'work from home' policies (COVID-19).

For now, I'll have a look at the suggested articles, but would love to see it implemented as a simple 'toggle' in the GUI....

Update: example of implementation here.
