Failure to install 64 bit Ubuntu as KVM guest, missing 64 bit support?

I've installed proxmox on a 64 bit Dell T300 server, and tried installing ubuntu as a guest operation system from the server-amd64 iso, however, I am met with the following error message when looking at the installation through vnc:

"This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detects an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU."

I may be missing something glaringly obvious here, but what could be the cause of this problem?

yes, you missed two obvious points:

  • always use the latest version (apt-get update and apt-get upgrade)
  • use the search function of the forum
