External usb drive breaks disk panel in Proxmox web interface

Whenever I add certain external disk to my proxmox server I can no longer view the disks panel from my home node - I get a spinning wheel for a minute or two before it eventually times out. The webui is very buggy after this and it is sometimes no longer possible to login via the shell panel. As soon as I physically remove the disk I can view disks again from the proxmox webui and everything seems to work well.

I've tried restarting Proxmox with the drive already plugged in but I still had the same problem. I have formatted the disk several times using fdisk, it shows up under lsblk fine, and I can create an LVM on the disk and have it appear under the Proxmox LVM panel without a problem, but as soon as I switch to the disk panel I get the same timeout error.

I'm fairly new to all of this but if someone could point me in the right direction I would be most grateful. The disk did work previously on my Proxmox node, but stopped working after I formatted it on another computer and then later reattached it back. The external disk is an ssd and is brand new - it was working fine before I formatted it on another computer and physically reattached it. I can save data to it using my desktop linux machine fine. I don't care about the data on the disk. I just want it to work on my host again.

Probably a hardware issue related to device I/Ovia USB. Try to run from the command line
Code:
lsusb
in this situation and check if the device you've connected is in the list. If there is no answer (and/or console is frozen) there is a problem with the usb interface (which causes blocking of all i/o actions then).

Thanks for your suggestion. The usb seems to show up in lsusb fine. Could something else be the issue?

Check whether the phenomenon is equipment specific, i.e. try a different disk (also with different adapter) or maybe an USB Stick.
