ProxMox users, admins, developers, et cetera,

Let us presuppose that I have a ProxMox cluser named "pve-cluster1" which consists of 3 nodes (pve1, pve2, pve3) and they are installed servers each with local disk space. Next I install ProxMox onto a laptop (pve-laptop) and have it join the cluster "pve-cluster1". Everything is fine so far...I can move VMs from one server to the other, from the laptop to a server, server to laptop, all is good.

I then decide I wish to withdraw the pve-laptop from the cluster and make it into a standalone ProxMox server (without having to reinstall ProxMox). What is the best way to do this?

If after some usage I wish to then bring pve-laptop back into the cluster is that possible in the future without reinstalling ProxMox and how so?

Thanks in advance to everyone to might have some ideas to proffer.

Thomas,

Thank you for your response, it indeed did work.

My initial foray into using ProxMox was simply to have a single server to run VMs on for my computer lab (mostly Linux VMs, though some are FreeBSD, Solaris, Windows, etc...). At first those VMs were running on local storage, then I got a second ProxMox server, then I wanted to move VMs around. Now I am at the juncture that I want a ProxMox cluster using a shared storage server as a repository for my VMs to be accessed by the cluster or my laptop running a non-clustered instance of ProxMox. None of this is super critical (so I am willing to have some single points of failure), but I also want to have some ways to test different technologies as well.

I am contemplating to use TrueNAS Core as my shared storage software and now need to figure out what the best manner to provide the shared storage to my ProxMox cluster will be. I think using ZFS RAID-Z1 volumes shared via NFS will likely be my mechanism with qcow2 files thereupon. But I am also open to other suggestions.
