aber das backup wird auf PBS seite fertig angelegt (nur ohne client log)? kannst du mal bei einem backup mittels "atop" auf beiden seiten "zuschauen", ob beim finalisieren des backups die last nach oben schnellt? eventuell macht es sinn das backup haendisch in der shell anzustossen und in 'ts' (paket: moreutils) zu pipen (also vzdump .... | ts), dann ist der output gleich mit timestamps versehen zur leichteren korrelierung.

After having had quite some trouble with PBS I decided to do a little test...

- Virtual PBS Server
- iSCSI Volume for PBS Data (on a dedicated backup storage that is replicated)
- All attached over 10G

Turns out the problem seems to be with my physical Server System that was playing havoc with the internal SATA Drives.

When running multiple backups of larger VMs, the physical server developed system-load figures of 25+ - which is absolutely not ideal.

With the virtual machine (I backup using pools now so I can give the PBS a dedicated Pool to be backed up using vzdump) I have not had any problems so far. Backup Speeds have gone up to 5GBit/s+ (depending on the VM and the storage the VM lies on).

This is now running for several weeks - and hasn't missed a beat so far.

So... the backup server absolutely needs IOPS - and a system being able to provide IOPS without generating high loads.

I think I will keep it as it is now...

Ich habe diesen Thread via google gefunden da ich aktuell das selbe Problem habe.
Wie bei allen davor laufen die Backups komplett durch und nur beim Log bekomme ich dann den klassischen

ERROR: Backup of VM 133 failed - proxmox-backup-client failed: Error: http request timed out

Akutell läuft das ganze auf PBS 2.1.1 und PVE 7.1.7
Die Storage für die VMs sind eine NetApp und der PBS sicher auf eine QNAP. der PBS selbst ist virtuell.

Ich hab aber das selbe Problem auf einem anderen Cluster auch noch. Hier wird von einer NetApp auf eine andere NetApp gesichert und der PBS ist auch virtuell.

Den Verify Job lasse ich aktuell nur noch einmal die Woche laufen.


Da es sich hier nur um das Logfile handelt das ein Prolbem macht kann es ja kaum ein Performance Problem sein oder?
Gibt es eine Möglichkeit hier einen Retry oder einen längeren Timeout zu konfigurieren?

I have had the exact same problems with 7.1... since update to 7.3-3 it seems like the problems are gone. At least I haven't had a single failed backup since.

I do use a NetApp as a primary storage (backup is an iscsi lun on a different storage (synology), though) but do have customers with a very similar setup...

In addition: PBS2.3-1 is somewhat more efficient, too.

I'd suggest you upgrade and try again.

Things to keep in mind, though:
- PBS loves memory. I have at least one gb per TB storage (at current: 8TB Backup Storage, 16GB Ram - works like a charm).
- If possible use a dedicated VLAN / Interface for PBS Traffic / iscsi traffic.

Thx for your update.
I can do a PBS update today. For the PVE's i need a maintenance window.
I dont use block (iscsi). All the storage or backup traffic goes through nfs (NetApp user...). The network connections are 10G and 25G.

I try the PBS update today and keep you posted.

Ouh... I did run this setup for a while... but found it quite unsatisfying to be honest. No clue how it is today... but with 1.x it wasn't what I would call reliable.

Still, ymmv. Just... I would give iSCSI a try for PBS and see if it behaves better.
