My suspicion is they're one of the models of SAS drive with a fatal firmware bug.
Have seen mention of that a few times in my hunting for cheap sas ssds on Ebay. Some models with firmware bugs that once they hit ~32k or ~72k hours of runtime which just die on the spot after tripping an internal counter.
Most of them are mentioned in the same breathe as "here's the firmware to fix that: (etc)", but it seems like if the drive hits the magic mark before the firmware is upgraded then it's as good as dead.
Though I kind of wonder if someone with electronics skill could flash the firmware chip directly (ie prom burner) and get them functional again.
