Hi,

i'm having trouble with the config of a VM.
My setup is proxmox on a Lenovo Thinkpad E540 (internal display only, lid permanetly closed, internal display off)

I installed a VM with debian 12 with KDE Plasma GUI.
I want to connect to this VM from my Windows 10 dual display setup and have a dual display full screen KDE.

I tried both "SPICE" and "Spice dual monitors" for display, but i can't get the second screen. i'm using VirtViewer v11.0-256 to connect.
Current config is "SPCIE (qxl,memory=128)"

I also reinstalled the VM several times with different spice display settings.

In VirtViewer, i see Display 1-4, but 2-4 are greyed out.

How can i get a dual display VM working with proxmox?
Kernel Version

Linux 6.2.16-19-pve #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC PMX 6.2.16-19 (2023-10-24T12:07Z)
PVE Manager Version

pve-manager/8.0.9/fd1a0ae1b385cdcd

Did you install spice-vdagent inside the VM?
Code:
sudo apt install spice-vdagent

Setting the display to "SPICE dual monitor" should then allow you to use a second display over SPICE.

You can also "apt install xrdp" inside the VM. Then you can use Windows Remote Desktop from your client machine. That has a setting for "use all monitors". Unfortunately if you want sound you'll have to visit this site and do some compiling of code: https://github.com/neutrinolabs/pulseaudio-module-xrdp

KDE Plasma isn't super-performant without a GPU but you probably already knew that.

no,i did not.

Linux

All Linux distributions released after 2011 have the necessary qxl driver included as a part of the Xorg package.

So i guess this is something different, but it was totally misleading.

i installed spice-vdagent, but even after reboots and shutdowns,i can use just 1 display.

actually, i want to use this VM "as native as possible" because i want to jump different RDP Host from there.
Not sure if RDP in RDP is fine.... in some cases it could be RDP in RDP in RDP... feeling a litte bit like inception

yes, but no big problem

Tried this on a different host with an existiting windows 10 and windows 11 VM.
Both working fine in dual display mode after installing spice guest tools.

then i installed debian + KDE Plasma on this other host. Still the same problem, even after installing spice-vdagent
Tried both wayland and X11 version of KDE Plasma.

Update: switched to xfce, works instant.
Update2: switched back to KDE Plasma, 2nd display is active now, but it is working very poor. Will try different DE and see whats best.

After further testing, it seems like some Desktop Environments, especially KDE Plasma, simply don't work well with spice dual display.
No Proxmox issues here.
But thanks a lot for pushing me in the right direction.
