Hello together,

I would be great if somebody can help me with my errors.
I want to replace a drive in my ZFS pool with another drive.

My steps are:

  1. zpool offline vault /dev/old_drive
  2. zpool replace vault (id from zpool status -g) /dev/new_drive

When the new installed drive gets resilvered, I get this error messages in dmesg:
Code:

This happens on two individual drives, with different sata cables in different ports on my mainboard.
Weirdly with a third drive with the same cable and port, it's working.

Could the ram that is currently installed be the problem? But why is it then working with my third drive?
SMART tests passes on both drives.

Thank you very much in advance!

[ 8914.156788] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] tag#15 Add. Sense: Logical block address out of range
Could it be those 2 drives are slightly smaller than the 3rd one?

All of the three drives are 4.0 TB drives
Same vendor and series?
Its not uncommon that there is a very small difference which leads to these kind of issues. I have seen this especially with SSDs in the ppast
I also have seen such kind of things when the controller firmware was going nuts. Very unlikely with a ZFS software approach, but anyways...

The drives I want to replace are WD Red 2TB and the three drives I tried, from them was one that worked, are all WD Red Plus 4TB

Can you provide the output of smartctl -a /dev/sdX for each of your 3 disks?

Selective self-test flags (0x0):
After scanning selected spans, do NOT read-scan remainder of disk.
If Selective self-test is pending on power-up, resume after 0 minute delay.

The third drive is currently not attachted, but the output of smartctl -a /dev/sdX can be provided if it's necessary.

Ah yes, it seems your first disk is an SMR one (EFAX), which can't handle ZFS. Similar issues were reported back in 2020 when the first ones appeared without any hint from WD.
And it seems the disks are simply WD RED, not `Plus` based on the `EFAX` part of the model. The `Plus` models should either contain `EFPX` or `EFZX` if I looked it up correctly.

So basically you bought `SMR` drives instead of `CMR` which can't keep up with the workload of ZFS and the drives time out.

Disk 1 (not working):
Model Family: Western Digital Red (SMR)
Device Model: WDC WD40EFAX-68JH4N0

This might be your problem.
SMR-drives are really bad for raid and even more with ZFS as a CoW-filesystem.

Edit: I was too slow, again.
