Currently we use network cards which use the e1000e kernel module.

Could someone suggest a faster alternative?

Used 10G(4x SDR) Infiniband cards/switches are very affordable.

We purchased dual port cards and redundant switches so we have redundant 10G connections to all nodes in the cluster.

the link shows those to be 1Gb Ethernet . Are those faster then the e1000 nics?

Infiniband is not Ethernet but you can run IP over Infiniband, see:

10G Infiniband also known as 4x SDR(Standard Data Rate) has 10G Signaling with 8G throughput.
So it can be up to 8X faster than 1G ethernet

With IP over IB the slower servers get a little over 5G and the faster ones nearly hit 8G.
Memory bandwidth and CPU play a role on how fast it will go.
