I know that kernel updates require a reboot. Do QEMU-related packages or pve-firmware also require a reboot?Besides these packages, is there a way to check whether a reboot is required after updating?

No reboot is not required for these packages but for running VMs must be fully Stopped and Started to load the new QEMU version.

In general, I would only reboot host for kernel updates as you mentioned.

You could try needrestart: needrestart man page

By default, it runs in interactive mode, i.e. if you update from the CLI (apt update && apt full-upgrade), it tells you whether a reboot is necessary, lists all services that need to be restarted, and offers to restart them via a TUI interface.

However, when in doubt, I simply reboot, because it's a homelab, and with my hardware, a reboot takes just a few minutes until all the VMs are up and running again. On actual server hardware that takes forever to check and initialize the hardware, though, that's obviously a different story. ;-)

With actual server hardware you are running it in a company and then you should have a cluster anyway if you need high-availability.
