Do the hosts need a gateway?

We currently have 3 PVE hosts.

Do these need a working gateway for the cluster to work without problems?

Our firewall is virtualized on the same host(s).
When using its IP on the hosts the PVE cluster does not come up (cororsync problems etc.).

Do all of your VPE hosts have a working gateway to the outside world (i.e. for updates etc.)?

technicall you don't need to have a gateway set to have a working cluster
now to get updates, if you don't want to set a gateway, you could set a proxy in your LAN for the apt updates
