do not install on a usb stick: it will work, but as soon as you really start using it, you will be swamped with errors due to the low speed, The best solution is to install on a sata ssd disk
 
Low speed is the smaller problem. Bigger problem will be that you loose your PVE installation as PVE will kill that USB stick in no time, as they aren'T durable enough to survive all the writes. But a M.2 SSD in a USB enclosure should work fine.
 
yes thank you, however I used the stick for a week and without knowing proxmox but only ESXi so I was going slowly and as soon as I started doing the first configs catastrophe ... then i finally understood i put an ssd and everything is fine
 
If you are short of sata ports, I had no issue with a 2.5 spinning HDD on a USB enclosure. ( a little on the slow side ./. boot and upgrades)

but OF COURSE, NO VM/LXC storage on it !
