difference between appliance and virtual machine

Hello!

Sorry for ask this dumb question, but i really dont understand whats the difference between OpenVZ container and a Virtual machine?
The only "big" difference i see is that i dont have to install debian if i use openvz.
Is there anything else i should know about it?
