Hi,

I have just discovered Proxmox VE and am very impressed!

My server has 2 x NICs that I wish to configure as a bonded pair (can see how to do this using the gui) but I would also like them to aquire their IP address via dhcp - could someone please give me some ideas how to do this?

Thanks!
James.

A server needs a fixed IP - why do you want DHCP?

DHCP does not automatically mean that IP is not fixed!

I use DHCP so that I can manage my IP addresses on the DHCP server - server will get the same IP address every time (MAC address is registered on the DHCP server to ensure same IP)

And this, imho, is the best way to do it. Centralize the mangement of your ips.

As far as I see DHCP is not compatible with our network model.
Also if we add the firewall you will run into issues.

I'm not quite sure why DHCP should be any problem at all - it is extremely common for servers to pick up their IP address via DHCP, and whether the IP is specifically defined when the server starts or picked up automatically seconds later via DHCP should make no difference to a firewall!

and how do you handle iscsi mounts when DHCP is not available during boot?

I agree to use DHCP for VM´s but for the host, the bonds, several brigdes, vlan etc. I am quite sure that DHCP will not ease the configuration in any way.

I think you're being a bit harsh on DHCP - it's just as suseptable to failure as just about anything else on the network - I'm sure you could introduce a level of redundancy if it was really required. One might ask what would happen if an appliance running on Proxmox VE used DHCP and iSCSI too... it would likewise have a problem!!!

There's always the risk that you might get hit by bus when you go to work in the morning but that doesn't stop people getting out of bed!!!

Can we get back to my original question.... how can DHCP be implement on the Proxmoc VE with bonding? The main reason I'm asking here is that traditionally I use servers based on Fedora (which implements networking differently to Debian) so I'm really just asking for a bit of help!!!

Thanks!
James.

Again, it does not work - you need to assign a fixed IP (the cluster code and iscsi needs a fixed IP and does not work with DHCP).
