[TUTORIAL] Dell OpenManage Enterprise

Hi, my VM is running but booting stops with message "booting from hard disk". I used this guide

https://ostechnix.com/import-qcow2-into-proxmox/

and tried every plausible setting. No change.

I even tried it on a Synology with virtual disks of different types (KVM, HyperV, ...). There booting stops with the same message. However, the Synology doesn't have enough RAM

I have successfully installed it now and it works perfectly. I will post a guide later on how to make it work

Create Empty VM:

Important to choose q35, and OVMF(uefi) bios, also EFI DISK with pre-enrolled keys.

delete the disks

give a good amount of cpu and ram

Donwload and unzip the dell ome KVM files inside /var/tmp

Then import the disks with commands:

qm disk import <vmid> /var/tmp/openmanage_enterprise.qcow2 local-zfs
qm disk import <vmid> /var/tmp/openmanage_enterprise.qcow2-1 local-zfs

Attach Unused disk0 and Unused disk1 under hardware

Go to options, boot order, enable virtio0 and change to first place.

Start the VM and then do nothing, it will reboot once, and then boot again. It should look something like this:

Thx. That's a great guide.

I guess my main issue was the wrong BIOS setting.

OME works like a charme

I tried two different instructions for the qcow import before Hais guide. Both used BIOS instead of UEFI. But Dell OME only works with UEFI. There is no information about this from Dell itself. As far as I can remember, I read it somewhere afterwards. During (successful) booting, OME also loads UEFI firmware.

I use VirtIO SCSI Single, obviously that works too.

ok, from OME "hardware requirements" https://www.dell.com/support/manual...cf7fe3-5e2c-493f-b6f8-44d31364311f&lang=en-us

  • OpenManage Enterprise appliance is configured with two VDs, each with an initial storage space of 415 GB. The primary VD is leveraged for the core application and database while the secondary VD is required for additional features and supporting plugins. However, even without the secondary VDs selected during deployment, the appliance can still boot up for TUI configuration using only the primary VHDX.
  • Ensure that your hypervisor storage has enough free space to support the recommended virtual disk size of the appliance, and enough overhead to support snapshots and future expansion of the virtual disk.
  • Ensure that the primary disk and the secondary disk are identical in size always

so 2 disks are important and must be equal in size. Idk whether the requirement for them to be SATA makes any differnece

so as a conclusion:
  1. your VM must run UEFI
  2. Both disks must be imported

Thanks so much for your guide! Can confirm that those steps work.

I just tried to install it and ran into the same BIOS problem. Thankfully a google search lead me here almost straight away and you solved my problem easily!
